Member Fraud Protection for Credit Unions
Scammer Guardian is the AI call screening service that credit unions deploy to elderly members to reduce phone scam losses. Per-seat pricing starts at $12/month with white-label and co-branded options. Pilot programs typically show measurable reductions in elder financial exploitation reports within 90 days.
The problem credit unions face
Elder financial exploitation is one of the fastest-growing categories of member fraud. The numbers are stark:
- $5 billion stolen from Americans 60+ in 2024 (FBI IC3)
- Most losses originate with a phone call like IRS impersonation, grandparent scams, tech support scams, and romance scams
- Recovery rates are under 5%. Once funds are wired, sent via gift card, or converted to cryptocurrency, they're gone.
- The dispute and investigation cost to the credit union per fraud report is typically $400–800 in operational time, even when no funds can be recovered
For a credit union with 50,000 members, even a 0.1% annual fraud incidence rate means 50 elder fraud cases a year, or $20,000–40,000 in operational cost alone, plus the harder-to-measure cost of member trust erosion.
The retail banking compliance and member experience teams are aware of this. The standard playbook today is education campaigns, branch staff training, and account-monitoring alerts. These are necessary but reactive: they catch the fraud after the call happened. The most effective intervention is to prevent the scam call from reaching the member at all.
That's what Scammer Guardian does.
What we offer credit unions
A member-facing AI call screening service that credit unions can deploy to vulnerable members (typically 65+, or members who have been previous fraud targets) to prevent phone scams from reaching their phones.
Three deployment models:
1. Member-paid (referral)
The credit union promotes Scammer Guardian as a recommended fraud prevention tool. Members sign up and pay directly. Credit union receives a referral commission per signup.
Best for: Credit unions wanting to add value without adding cost.
2. Subsidized (per-seat)
The credit union covers some or all of the cost for vulnerable members. Per-seat pricing of $12/month for 50–500 seats, dropping to $9/month for 500–5,000 seats.
Best for: Credit unions with a defined high-risk member population (e.g., 65+ members with checking accounts, or members who have filed previous fraud reports).
3. White-label / co-branded
Scammer Guardian deployed as the credit union's own service ("[Credit Union] Member Shield" powered by Scammer Guardian). Custom branding, dedicated success manager, integrated single sign-on with online banking.
Best for: Credit unions over 100,000 members, or those wanting to use fraud protection as a member acquisition and retention differentiator.
ROI math
For a credit union with 10,000 members aged 65+, deploying Scammer Guardian to the 1,000 highest-risk members at the subsidized $12/seat tier:
| Line | Annual Cost / Benefit |
|---|---|
| Subsidy cost (1,000 × $12 × 12) | $144,000 |
| Avoided fraud losses (estimated 30–50% reduction at 0.5% baseline incidence × $9K avg loss) | $13,500 – $22,500 |
| Avoided dispute operational cost (50% reduction at $600/case × 50 cases) | $15,000 |
| Member retention lift (0.5% retention improvement on 1,000 members at $300 LTV) | $1,500 |
| Member acquisition lift (referral and word-of-mouth from "they care about us") | (varies) |
| Net measurable ROI in year 1 | (typically negative; positive in year 2) |
The honest math: as a hard-dollar fraud prevention tool, the subsidized model is roughly break-even in year 1. The real value compounds in year 2+ via member trust, retention, and brand differentiation in a category (community banking) that competes on relationships.
For credit unions where the question is "what unique value do we deliver beyond rates?", member fraud protection is one of the most concrete answers.
What deployment looks like
Phase 1 (weeks 1-2): Pilot scoping
- Identify 25–100 members for a 90-day pilot (typically members with fraud history or members aged 75+)
- Define success metrics (fraud reports, member satisfaction, dispute volume)
Phase 2 (weeks 3-4): Member onboarding
- Joint outreach (credit union introduces, Scammer Guardian onboards)
- 5-minute setup per member, supported by Scammer Guardian success team
- Family member (typically adult child) added as guardian when applicable
Phase 3 (weeks 5-12): Active screening
- Live AI screening across pilot members
- Weekly aggregate reports to credit union (no PII; aggregated scam types, blocked counts, member retention)
- Member NPS measurement
Phase 4 (week 13+): Pilot review
- Joint review of pilot data
- Decision on scaled rollout, white-label, or extension
What credit unions ask us
Will members trust an AI to screen their calls?
Member NPS in our consumer base is consistently >70. The framing matters: Scammer Guardian is positioned as a protective service for the member, not as surveillance. The protected member's experience doesn't change (their phone still rings normally for real callers); only the scams stop coming.
Does this work for members who are not tech-savvy?
Yes. The protected member doesn't need to learn anything. Setup happens once, by an adult child or by a Scammer Guardian success rep, and then it runs invisibly.
What about members on landlines?
Our smartphone product is what's available now. Our landline product is in development for late 2026. We can include landline-using members in pre-launch pilots.
Compliance and data
- We do not access member account data.
- We do not share, sell, or aggregate caller data.
- We are SOC 2 Type II in progress (target: Q4 2026).
- We can sign BAAs and operate under credit union vendor risk management programs.
Marketing assets
We provide co-branded landing pages, email templates, and member-facing one-pagers for credit unions deploying us. White-label customers get fully custom branding.
